Be Prepared & Stay Prepared
During these intense times, is the time when most of us
start thinking about the “what if’s?”.
However, when the disaster strikes, it’s too late to get prepared. It’s crucial, now more than ever, to be
prepared should any time of disaster strikes.
At any point in time you should always be prepared. After you’re prepared, it’s extremely important
to stay informed. Several things should
be done in order to get prepared: create
a disaster supply kit, gather all important documents in a safe, dry place, and
make a plan for you and your family.
Disaster supply kits should include enough supplies to
take care of your family for at least 3 days.
It should contain water, non-perishable food, clean air items (nose and
mouth protection masks, plastic sheeting, and duct tape), extra clothing, first
aid kit, cell phone chargers, emergency items (batteries, flashlights, shovel,
baby wipes, trash bags, state maps), and special need items. While you have this kit, it is vital that you
maintain and check its accuracy periodically.
It’s also important to remember our pets. Gather food, pet medications, leash &
crate, bleach, and current photos of your pets.
After you’ve gathered your kit, you’re next priority is
to make copies and/or gather all important paperwork. These documents include insurance policies,
lists of medications, driver’s license or photo ID, bank account information,
credit card information, all financial records, inventory of your possessions,
and cash and/or traveler’s checks.
Having these documents together will keep the chaos to a minimum when
you need this information quickly.
Creating a plan for your family is crucial should your
family ever be separated. It’s important
to make sure that each family member is prepared with an emergency contact to
check-in outside of the family should a disaster occur. It’s important to designate a place to go and
meet should separation ever occur.
Check all local evacuation routes and designated in-place shelters and
have an updated list at all times.
Should you ever need any further assistance you can call
the Texas Help line at 2-1-1. 2-1-1 is a
nonemergency information and referral hotline. It is available 24 hours a day,
7 days a week to every resident of Texas. Specialists are trained to provide
callers with current information such as evacuation
routes and locations of food and shelter during a
disaster. 2-1-1 Texas is included in
Texas Homeland Security strategy as a way to share information and mobilize
resources during local, state or national
disasters. For more information, visit the Web at
